Rising energy bill leads to referendum on pool's future

People in Buckfastleigh will be asked if they'll pay more council tax to help keep the town's pool open

Residents in Buckfastleighare being asked if they would pay an extra 77p a week to keep the town's open air swimming pool open, due to rising energy bills.

Volunteers last night spoke at a parish council meeting which will hold a referendum on the idea

Pam Barrett Chair of Trustees, said: "The Parish Meeting has voted to support holding a poll/vote on the following question - do you support an increase in the town council precept (council tax) by an estimated 77p per household per week in order to keep Victoria Park and pool open from 2023 onwards?" 

 "The formal vote is likely to take place on Thursday 27 October 2022.

"Buckfastleigh parish residents on the electoral roll will be eligible to vote in person only.  The vote will be held at Buckfastleigh Town Hall between 4-9pm.  Exact voting details will be available shortly. 

"Victoria Park trustees will be holding a series of meetings and events over the coming weeks to answer your questions  and provide information."
