Work is ongoing to recover a crane that caught on fire on the A38 in Devon this morning (Monday 22 July).

Emergency services were first called to the scene in Plymouth at around 7.23am.

Traffic monitoring service INRIX is reporting that the westbound side of the road is currently closed from the Deep Lane Junction, Plympton to the Forder Valley Interchange.

Part of the eastbound side was shut for some time due to smoke from the fire but has since reopened.

The blaze was put out by 9.30am, with specialist recovery agents at the scene.

National Highways service providers are also in attendance to assess a substantial fuel spillage from the fire.

A diversion is in place

Road users are advised to follow the below diversion which is not symbol led:

  • Leave the A38 at Deep Lane
  • Turn right onto the B3146
  • Follow to Marsh Mills junction and re-join the A38
