Plymouth Samaritans ready to help those struggling this Christmas
Volunteers in our city will be among around 1,500 answering calls on Christmas Day
Volunteers at Plymouth Samaritans will be there to help this Christmas.
Around 1,500 volunteers across the country will be picking up the phone this year for those who are struggling.
New research from Samaritans reveals that being separated from family and loved ones over the festive season is one of the biggest concerns facing callers.
Out of over 1,400 of the charity's volunteers, a quarter of them say they have spoken to people who were feeling concerned about their wellbeing over Christmas and the winter period.
Among these callers, there is also unease and uncertainty about what the changing restrictions will mean for how they will spend their holidays.
The charity says four main themes emerge at this time of year: family, loneliness, the impact of the cold weather and short days, and financial worries.
Norman Holmes, Plymouth Samaritans' Director said that Christmas can be difficult for many people:
"It's a time when loneliness can really hit home and this could be heightened this year. We want people to know that confidential support is available 24/7, and that we are there for them this Christmas.
"Every call for help is answered by a trained volunteer and talking to us is always free and confidential. Samaritans has never been a more vital lifeline.
"If you can make a donation to support our work this festive season, you'll be helping to ensure that we can be there to listen not just on Christmas but throughout the year."
Plymouth residents can help Samaritans to be there for those who need emotional support this Christmas by making a donation.
As little as ÂŁ5 will help Samaritans answer a call for help from somebody struggling this Christmas.
