Air pollution is back at pre pandemic levels in several cities across the UK, including in Plymouth.

That's according to new research out today (17 June) to mark Clean Air Day.

The research analysed nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter levels and its findings are prompting fears that air quality could rise to dangerous new levels when the country fully unlocks.

Of the ten cities monitored, sites in Sheffield, London, Brighton and Bristol also recorded pre-pandemic levels of air pollution.

Sheffield's level is actually worse than before lockdown by roughly 25 percent.

On seeing the results, air quality and ventilation specialists, Nuaire polled 2,000 adults nationwide and 83 percent said they noticed air quality improved over the last year.

Their research also showed:

  • Over half (55 percent) say air pollution has a direct impact on their lives.
  • The majority (57 percent) plan to take extra measures this summer to protect themselves from air pollution
  • A quarter are seeking better ventilation at work and home to combat the problem
  • A fifth (18 percent) say they will wear a face mask outside, rising to 29 percent in London
  • One in 10 Brits would even pull a ‘sickie’ so they don’t have to travel to work as air pollution peaks.

Air quality and ventilation expert Wayne Glover, managing director of Nuaire, said: “Our study shows air pollution has already returned to normal levels in half of the cities we analysed, despite final lockdown restrictions yet to be lifted.

“If this continues, it’s safe to assume that we are on a trajectory for yet another summer of polluted air."

He says the way the public reacted to their survey shows "real fear and concern" about pollution levels.

“But unfortunately, staying home and pulling sickies isn’t the answer. The truth is, poor air quality can’t be avoided, outdoor air quality is a major contributor to indoor air quality."
