The evacuation of a Royal Mail sorting office in Plymstock is being treated as a hoax.

People had to leave the building yesterday (2 June) as a precaution after police received reports there was a suspicious package.

They say no hazardous substances were found and are treating the incident as a hoax.

A 35-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested in connection with the incident.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:

"No hazardous substances were found and the cordons were lifted by 2pm.

"The incident is being treated as a hoax and a 35-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested in connection with our enquiries. He remains in custody for questioning."

At the time it was thought to be possible anthrax exposure.

South Western Ambulance Service monitored a number of patients on the scene, but say they did not show any symptoms and did not need to be treated or conveyed to hospital.
