On Thursday (6 May), Plymouth, went to the polls on what is thought to be the biggest test of opinion outside of a general election in around half a century.

Plymouth City Council holds elections by thirds. A third of seats are contested each year for three years, followed by a year when no elections are held.

There are 20 wards and 57 elected members.

All wards in Plymouth have had elections this year, except from Drake.

Overall turnout in Plymouth this year was 35.93%.

Before this election, the council was run by Labour, with Cllr Tudor Evans OBE as the leader - but following on from Friday's (7 May) result, the party has lost overall control of the local authority.

The Conservative Party now hold 26 seats, with Labour retaining 24, and the remaining seven going to Independent members.

The Tories have just fallen short of taking total control of the council - they needed 29 seats to take over fully.

They will now be looking to the local authorities' Independents in order to move forward and take control of administration.
