People in Brixham are today being asked if they want to leave Torbay Council and join South Hams instead.

The parish poll was triggered after a request by 11 people and is separate to next month's Torbay Council elections.

The first question on the parish poll today is 'Do you wish to leave the jurisdiction of Torbay Council?' and the second 'Do you wish Brixham to join the South Hams District?'

Today's vote is not binding and will be an expression of views about the future of Brixham.

Unlike next month's local elections, people will not need voter ID to take part in today's parish poll.

Torbay Council'c chief exec Anne-Marie Bond said: “Following notification of the outcome of the Brixham Parish meeting held on 13 March 2023 and having been satisfied that the Parish Poll has been correctly called, arrangements are now being made to hold the poll on Thursday 13 April 2023.

“However, unlike a usual election, there are no poll cards, nor any postal votes. Further, the result of the poll is not binding, it is purely an expression of views. The cost of running the poll will be met by Brixham Town Council, which is anticipated to cost approximately £10,000-£15,000.”

Polling stations will be open from 4pm to 9pm at the following locations:

⦁ Higher Brixham Community Centre

⦁ Central Garage Showroom

⦁ Scala Hall

⦁ Brixham Cricket Club

⦁ Brixham Bowling Club

⦁ St Mary’s Park Bowling Club

⦁ Brixham Rugby Club
