There's a chance to try being an on-call firefighter in Devon and Somerset.

The fire service is hosting a series of 'have a go' sessions across the two counties.

An on-call firefighter is someone who might have other roles but could help respond to fires if needed.

Events are being hosted at the following fire stations:

  • 6 July 2024 - Shepton Mallett
  • 3 August 2024 - Totnes
  • 14 September 2024 - Yeovil Positive Action Event
  • 5 October 2024 - Taunton Group - station to be confirmed
  • 2 November 2024 - Seaton
  • 8 March 2025 - Middlemoor Positive Action Event
  • 26 April 2025 - Barnstaple
  • 17 May 2025 - Ivybridge

Paul Compton from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Becoming an on-call firefighter is a big thing for people and there's a lot of different aspects to the job that people probably want to try out first.

"It's really good to give people the opportunity to come along to stations, find out from the crews what it's like to be an on-call firefighter, test out some of the kit and learn about the role that you will be doing.

"There's a bit of a myth sometimes that you have to be some kind of superhuman. We have a diverse range of people from across different professions and backgrounds who become on-call firefighters.

"You have to be physically fit, you're going to environments where you're going to be in quite demanding situations. It works around your normal job."
