A man has been arrested after an overnight armed police negotiation at a property in Plymouth.

Police were called around 5.00pm yesterday (31 May), following reports of an assault on a woman at an address in West Park.

The woman had been assaulted by a man in possession of an axe and sustained a minor hand injury. She left the property and was located by police nearby.

Firearms officers and local officers attended the scene, along with the fire service and ambulance. A containment was put on the address while police negotiators engaged with a man inside the property.

The man later threatened to turn on the gas supply and set fire to the property. A number of neighbouring properties were evacuated as a result.

The man was also seen in possession of what appeared to be a handgun.

Officers gained entry to the property around 2.40am today (1 June), and the man was brought safely out of the address.

All residents were able to return to their homes around 3.20am.

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of assault and threats to cause criminal damage. He remains in custody.
