A statue remembering a pioneering black footballer is going to be unveiled in Plymouth in October.

Jack Leslie played for Plymouth Argyle in the 1920s and 1930s, and was called up for England in 1925 - but never got to play, which some say was down to his race.

A campaign for a statue raised more than £100,000 in a matter of weeks.

The statue will be revealed at Home Park outside the Lyndhurst and Devonport stand on the 7th of October.

Campaign co-founders, Greg Foxsmith and Matt Tiller, said, “The statue and plinth will celebrate Jack’s life and achievements as well as tell the story of that injustice of 1925.

"It will be a proud moment for everyone involved when the monument is revealed outside Home Park where Jack plied his trade for so many years.

The statue also has the support of Leslie's three granddaughters, who will be present at the ceremony.
