Ian Foster appointed new Plymouth boss

Ian Foster has been appointed as the new Head Coach of Plymouth Argyle.

The 47-year-old has previously served managed England's under-18, under-19, and under-20 sides, as well as serving as the assistant manager of the England women's national team under Phil Neville.

He was most recently assistant to Steven Gerrard at Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.

Foster replaces Steven Schumacher, who left to manage fellow Championship side Stoke City last month.

It's been confirmed Kevin Nancekivell, who's taken temporary charge of the Pilgrims since Schumacher's departure, will remain part of the club's coaching staff.

The rest of Foster's backroom team will be confirmed at a later date.

Plymouth Argyle's Chairman Simon Hallett says Foster is the "perfect candidate to lead our great football club forward as we embark on our next five-year mission."

"Ian showed a passion and knowledge for the club throughout the interview process, and showcased in some detail how he sees the best way to take forward our exciting and dynamic young squad.

"Having worked with some of the best players this country has produced, he has a passion for developing young footballers, as well as playing expansive, attacking football which fits perfectly with how we want the club to progress.

"I am excited to see how he takes the team forward and very much welcome him to Plymouth Argyle.”

The Pilgrims' Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, says the club's found "the right person for the job."

"He Foster has incredible pedigree as a coach and working with young players and we feel he is the perfect person to take forward this incredible group of players we have."

Foster takes over a Pilgrims side who are currently 18th in the Championship, with a 7-point cushion over the relegation zone.
