A new hotel has been approved in Plymouth city centre above Poundland.

Work has been going on during the summer to convert two upper floors between New George Street and Cornwall Street to a 95-bed hotel.

The hotel which will operate under the global brand Oyo is in the space once used as storage for the former Woolworth’s store.

There will be 55 rooms with en suite bathrooms and 40 will have access to separate facilities.

The hotel called Plymouth Central with a main entrance on New George Street has been developed by Red Lion Estates.

It submitted a planning application to the city council for change of use to a hotel in November 2019.

Permission with a series of conditions was granted on October 19.

The developer said in the summer the 55 en suite rooms would open first, with the rest following when pandemic restrictions allowed.

It is reported to be the first new hotel in the city centre since Jurys Inn opened in 2007.
