Villagers have praised the emergency services and community spirit after a thatched cottage fire overnight

People who were evacuated after last last night's thatched cottage fire in Devon have praised the community spirit and firefighters - who worked to save their properties last night.

Just after 12.30am more than 12 fire engines were sent to Woodbury Salterton and they worked through the night to bring the flames under control and stop the fire spreading to adjoining properties.

The cause of the fire has still not been confirmed.

Attending stations included Okehampton, Torquay, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Dawlish, Danes Castle, Exmouth, Crediton, Cullompton, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth, Clyst St George, Middlemoor, Wellington and Martock.
