A man has died following a cycle accident on Dartmoor.

Search and rescue teams were originally called to help with another casualty on Saturday night (21 August).

However, they came across the site of a male casualty on the Princetown to Eylesbarrow track near Nun's Cross.

He was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Tavistock said:

"At 20:48 during deployment as part of the response to our first call out last night, one of our hill parties came across the site of a cycle accident on the Princetown to Eylesbarrow track near Nun’s Cross.

"An assessment of the male casualty was made and no signs of life were evident. One of our Team’s doctors was diverted from his original tasking whilst Police and Ambulance were requested to attend.

"Sadly the gentleman was confirmed as deceased and we stretchered him to our RV. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this time."

The team were initially called by police at 7.13pm to assist paramedics with a female casualty located near Erme Pits.

The 17-year-old girl was in a group of Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold Expedition walkers and had been experiencing fitting intermittently and could not continue.

The rescue team said:

"DSRT Tavistock was called by the Police at 19:13 to assist South West Ambulance Service with a casualty located in a remote part of Dartmoor. The casualty was a 17 year old girl in a group of Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold Expedition walkers, and she had been experiencing fitting intermittently and could not continue.

"A hasty hill party was deployed to the grid reference given, near Erme Pits, and arrived on site by 21:00. After assessment the casualty was given glucose and insulated to prevent further heat loss as she was already mildly hypothermic. A request was made for a helicopter evacuation, and Maritime Coastguard Agency helo 924 was deployed to assist.

"SWAST HART Team also arrived on site at 21:30 and duty of care was transferred to them. Because of thick, low cloud cover the helicopter had to abort its mission and so our members stretchered the casualty to waiting Ambulance vehicles on the Red Lake track which leads down towards Ivybridge.

"Our hill parties then walked back in heavy rain and mist to Plym Ford, where they were picked up by Team LandRovers and driven back to our RV at Peat Cot, arriving there at 02:15. A successful but lengthy deployment by 21 of our members."
