Firefighters have been tackling a blaze on the thatched roof of a cottage in a Devon village.

Teams from 15 stations were called to Alverdiscott at around 10.19pm last night (Friday 16 August).

On arrival, crews confirmed a fire involving a thatched property, which was smouldering near the chimney breast.

National Grid was also requested to attend to isolate external power lines.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said teams were still on the scene at 2.35am this morning.

The fire is now out and all appliances have left the scene. The cause was deemed accidental ignition.

50% of the thatched roof was damaged, and 50% of the property damaged by smoke and water.

Duty of care has been left with occupants. A revisit will be made by local crews today to ensure all hot spots are dealt with.
