A Plymouth commando today mouthed the words 'I’m sorry' after being given an 18 year sentence for a violent and sustained attack on a woman.
The court heard Sam Evans, 29, from Ker Street, Devonport left his victim with lasting emotional and physical damage after she suffered a 'prolonged and sustained' attack.
The woman today read her victim impact statement out in court - facing the perpetrator directly and looking him in the eye - telling Evans he had caused 'irreparable damage to her life' and left her 'isolated and withdrawn'.
The court heard she has lost her faith in humanity and 'will always have questions' as to why he did what he did -and had been a happy-go-lucky' woman, but that version of herself 'never came home'.
In his sentencing, Judge Robert Linford called it 'a utterly savage attack, the stuff of nightmares' and told Evans he was being sentenced to 14 years in jail and a further four on licence
He told Evans that 'alcohol does not excuse the way you behaved - if anything it makes it worse'.
Evans was convicted in March of rape, two counts of sexual assault by penetration, non-fatal strangulation and assault causing actual bodily harm
