Thames Valley Police are continuing to raise awareness around the importance of road safety.

Figures from the road safety charity Brake highlight that every year, more than 1700 people die on UK roads. Another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries.

A week of action around road safety has started with a day of remembrance today, Sunday 17th November looking at families trying to navigate their way through what happens following a road crash.

Behind every incident is a family whose lives change forever.

Head of Roads Policing in the Thames Valley DCI Michael Bettington said:

"Everyone uses the roads, whether you're walking your kids to school, cycling to the shops, driving to work, whatever it is, everyone uses them. So it's a total shared responsibility and duty on everyone to just use them properly and safely.

Ultimately the actions of one person can adversely affect the lives of many other people for years to come. So it is massively important and you just have to turn it around and think if that happened to me or if someone drove in that particular condition or in that particular way and it harmed me or my loved ones, how would I feel about that?"

He also told us TVP are continually out on our roads targeting high risk roads and high risk offenders.

Thames Valley Police will be holding their annual Road Death Memorial Service at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Thame at 2:30pm. (17/11)

Brake are now calling on our new government to provide sustainable funding and parity of care for road victims and their families, whoever they are, wherever they live, and whether or not a crime has occurred.

Brake provide emotional and practical support to thousands of families during their darkest and most difficult times, you can find out more about the charity here.
