A teenager is under arrest and special stop and search powers in place after disorder in Abingdon.

Officers put in place a Section 60 order in place on Wednesday 16th October following reports of disorder this afternoon.

Police were called at around 2.45pm to reports of a disorder in Wootton Road.

A 17-year-old boy from Abingdon has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

No one was injured in the incident.

Following the incident, officers authorised a Section 60 order which will include Wildmoor and Northcourt, as shown on the map.

The order, which will give officers extra powers to carry out stop and search checks, will be in place throughout the day today (Thursday 17th October).

The order will cover Wootton Road, Vineyard, Oxford Road and Dunmore Road.

Inspector Michael Havers said:

“We have put this Section 60 order in place in a specific area of Abingdon to prevent potential violence.

“The order will give our officers extra powers to carry out stop and search activity, and has been enacted for the safety of the public.

“These are emergency powers and the threshold to implement them is very high, however we are using them to keep our communities safe.

“You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual.

“If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

He added if residents have any concerns, you can speak to officers who will be on patrol.
