29 people accused of supporting Palestine Action in alleged attacks on an Israeli defence firm’s UK site and planes at RAF Brize Norton have announced plans to go on hunger strike while held in prison awaiting trial.

Campaign group Prisoners for Palestine said those taking part will begin their hunger strike on 2nd November, claiming prison conditions have worsened following the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation in July.

Alleged offences and upcoming trial

Five group members currently held in custody are accused of involvement in vandalising two planes at RAF Brize Norton on 20th June, causing an estimated £7 million worth of damage. Palestine Action has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The group is also linked to a break-in at Elbit Systems in Bristol last August, where sledgehammers and whips were allegedly used. Six activists were arrested at the scene, with another 18 detained later. Eight of those accused are due for trial at Woolwich Crown Court on 17th November.

Protest aims and campaign statements

Prisoners for Palestine said it delivered a letter to the Home Office on Monday listing its demands, which include release on bail and the dropping of terrorism-related charges. Some of the accused have reportedly been held for over a year.

A spokesperson for the group said: “This is a historic moment. The government has left the prisoners with no other option but to hunger strike for their freedom and justice.”

Dr Asim Qureshi, research director at campaign group Cage, which is helping negotiate the action, said: “This hunger strike, if it goes ahead, will be the first of its kind in at least two decades. It brings into sharp focus the violence of the carceral system in the UK, a violence we often associate with places afar.”

The Home Office has been approached for comment.
