Oxfordshire MP urges Prime Minister to speak with Donald Trump about ending Gaza suffering
Donald Trump’s State visit is between Wednesday 17th to 19 September
An Oxfordshire MP is urging the Prime Minister to speak with the US President about ending the suffering in Gaza during his State visit to the UK this week.
The Keir Starmer will have talks with Donald Trump during his three-day visit at the prime minister's country residence at Chequers in Buckinghamshire.
Traditionally, second-term presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch.
Although, Starmer issued an invitation to the UK on behalf of the King during a White House meeting in February.
Calum Miller is MP for Bicester and Woodstock as well as Foreign Affairs spokesperson for Liberal Democrats.
He said: “There is one person who could potentially bring the conflict in Gaza to an end other than Benjamin Netanyahu, and that is Donald Trump.
“Everybody can see that he's the person who could pick up the phone and tell Netanyahu to bring the suffering in Gaza to an end.
“Many, many people have written to me to say how much they want to see an end to the suffering of the Gazan civilians and the release of the hostages. That's why we as Liberal Democrats have been pressing the Prime Minister to make this a very high priority for the visit of Donald Trump.”
Mr Miller also says, “this is absolutely urgent”.
He added: “Children are suffering every single day. The level of starvation due to the aid blockade in Gaza is truly appalling.
“I've spoken to medics from Oxford who travelled out to Al Nasser Hospital and talked about the shortage of medical supplies and the fact that people are dying in hospital needlessly because the medics just don't have the equipment they need.”
“Donald Trump has said that he thinks that the starvation and the situation in Gaza is terrible. Keir Starmer needs to call him out on that and tell him that he must act. Things could very possibly get even worse”, Mr Miller added.
