Matt Bloomfield has been appointed as the new Head Coach of Oxford United’s Men’s First Team.
The 41-year-old brings extensive experience to the role, having managed over 150 EFL games with teams such as Colchester United, Wycombe Wanderers, and Luton Town.
His playing career saw him make more than 500 appearances.
Bloomfield will observe Oxford United’s FA Cup Third Round match against MK Dons from the stands tonight (9th January) and begin leading training sessions next week.
He is expected to make his home debut against Bristol City, although the date is yet to be confirmed.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the appointment, Bloomfield said: “I’m incredibly proud to be joining Oxford United. This felt like the right place at the right time. Oxford United are a Club with good foundations, ambition, and a playing group with significant potential, and that matches exactly where I am as a coach.
“I want my teams to work hard, attack with purpose, and play with a clear identity. Everyone has to understand their role, be accountable, and deliver consistently. I can’t wait to get out onto the grass and begin working with the players and staff to help this Club push forward this season and beyond.”
Ed Waldron, the club’s Head of Football Operations, explained that Bloomfield stood out during an in-depth selection process due to his strong leadership skills and clear vision for building team success.
He said: “Matt stood out for his attention to detail, work ethic, and his strong belief in building success the right way. He is a coach with a very clear idea of how he wants his teams to play.
“He has a proven track record of developing both teams and individuals through strong leadership and communication, and we believe he is the right person to strengthen the group now and moving forward.”
Waldron also mentioned that Oxford United will support Bloomfield as he takes on the role, including assistance during the January transfer window where two new players have already joined the squad.
An announcement regarding additions to Bloomfield’s coaching staff is expected soon.
