After a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been sentenced for harassment and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal in Oxford.

Dudley Stein, aged 33, of Stowford Road, Oxford, pleaded guilty and received three years in prison and an eight-year order preventing him owning domestic pets at Oxford Crown Court yesterday (13/10).

On 25 July this year, at around 11am, Stein was found by the victim, a woman in her thirties, hitting her dog with a hockey stick causing serious injuries, resulting in him having to be put down.

The victim tried to intervene, but did not suffer any injuries.

Stein was also found to be in breach of a restraining order.

Stein was arrested on 27 July and charged the next day.

He pleaded guilty on 28 July, the same day he was charged.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Michael Lewis, said: “This was a violent sustained attack on a helpless animal who could not defend himself.

“I hope this significant sentence highlights to the public that any reports of animal abuse will be treated extremely seriously.

“Abusing animals can be part of a larger cycle of abuse and is often a precursor to violence towards humans in a domestic setting.

“I thank the victim in this case for coming forward and supporting the investigation, I am pleased that justice for the victim and her dog has been served."
