Murder investigation launched following death of man in Oxford

Police were called to an assault in St Aldates following reports that a man had been punched over the weekend

Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit has launched a murder investigation in Oxford.

At around 4.25pm on Saturday, police were called to an assault in St Aldates, following reports that a man had been punched. The victim, a man in his sixties, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Sadly, the victim died of his injuries in hospital on Sunday.

A 45-year-old man of no fixed abode has been arrested on suspicion of assault of a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm with intent and murder. He remains in custody at this time.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Laura Corscadden of the Major Crime Unit said: “We are still in the early stages of this investigation and have made an arrest in connection with this incident.

“We are working to establish the circumstances of what happened, as well as identify the man’s next of kin.

“I understand that incidents such as this are tragic events and I recognise the concern this will cause in the local community; however, we do not believe there is a threat to the wider public at this time.
