Murder investigation launched in Abingdon after death of woman in her 40's

Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit has launched a murder investigation in Abingdon.

At around 6.26am today (30/5), we were called to Sherwood Avenue following the death of a woman.

Lifesaving attempts were made by South Central Ambulance Service but, tragically, a 40-year-old woman was declared deceased at the scene.

Her next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Formal identification and other coronial processes will be undertaken in due course.

A 34-year-old man from Oxford has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at this time.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Stuart May said: “Firstly, I’d like to wish my condolences to the family of the woman who sadly died.

“I also understand the concern that this may cause within the community, but we believe this was an isolated incident in which the victim and suspect were known to each other. We do not believe there is a threat to the wider public."

“A scene will remain in place as we continue to carry out our enquiries and we thank the community in advance for their patience as our officers continue their work.
