Memorial football match in honour of Bicester fire victims to take place today
Legends from Oxford United will play Ardley United in a charity match this afternoon, to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity
A memorial football match is taking place this afternoon to honour the two firefighters and a local businessman who were killed in a fire in Bicester.
Firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, along with father-of-two Dave Chester, 57, all lost their lives when a huge blaze broke out at Bicester Motion in May.
Oxford United legends will be playing Ardley United, who are based near Bicester, in hope of raising thousands of pounds for the Fire Fighters Charity.
Former Chelsea and U’s winger, Peter Rhoades-Brown is Oxford United’s club ambassador, he said: “This sort of tragedy doesn't go away and it's it's important that we do it.”
Rhoades-Brown is part of the management team but also says he expects to get some minutes on the pitch: "When it boils down to these sort of games, these boys have stepped up to coming out of like retirement again and I’ve played in loads of charity games.
“It’s just to go and give people a bit of entertainment while we can still put on a pair of boots and a pair of shorts that fit, and we'll continue doing it.”
The match is hosted by Ardley United and the club’s Chairman, Ian Fever said: “It was a tragic situation that’s really knocks the community.
“Nobody could quite believe what they were hearing about that that event at Bicester Heritage.
“I just thought, we should all do what we can to support and help raise money in any way we can.”
