Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, a man has been sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment after he was convicted of multiple counts of rape and other sex offences.

Paul Burton, aged 45, from Oxfordshire, was convicted by unanimous jury verdicts on three counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault by penetration, one count of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour and eight counts of adult sexual activity with a female child in a trial at Oxford Crown Court, which concluded on Monday December 11th.

Returning to court for sentencing the following day, Burton was jailed, given an indefinite restraining order and ordered to sign onto the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Burton was originally arrested for the offences on 18 March 2021 and charged on 17 October 2022.

The offending occurred over a nine-year period at an address in Oxfordshire where he engaged in repeated sexual abuse, coercive behaviour and rape.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Marta Kowalska said:

“This sentence brings justice to the victim and appropriately punishes Burton for his reprehensible behaviour over a number of years.

“The severe psychological harm that he has caused the victim during the time that these offences took place took an enormous toll on her.

“I would like to thank the victim for placing her trust in us to investigate these crimes and bring Burton to justice.

“I hope that she can take some comfort from this case being resolved and she can start to rebuild her life.

“I also hope that this will encourage anybody else who has been the victim of sex offences, be they recent or non-recent, that you will be listened to, and we will investigate and bring offenders to justice, no matter what the passage of time.”
