There are heavy delays on the M40 following a serious crash earlier today (12 May).

Highways England say the motorway is shut southbound between J6 Watlington and J5 Stokenchurch.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and Thames Valley Police are on scene along with National Highways Traffic Officers. A substantial fuel spillage has also been reported.

There are delays of up to an hour on approach to the closure.

A Thames Valley Spokesperson said: “At around 8.19am today (12/5), we were called to a serious injury road traffic collision on the M40 southbound between Junction 6 and Junction 5.

“A lorry overturned and a man sustained serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment, where he remains.

“Anyone who witnessed this collision or has information, should call 101, quoting 43250231378.”

Road users are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs:

Exit the M40 at J6 onto the B4009

Turn right on to A40

Continue on the A40 and rejoin the M40 at J5

If you're travelling from further afield, you may wish to consider using the M1.
