An event for Oxfords Cowley Road Carnival is being held today (Sunday 4th August) partly in memory of a director who sadly passed away from cancer.

From midday today organisers of the Cowley Road Carnival are hosting a fundraising event for the September festival at the Cowley Retreat.

Hundreds are expected to the music event, which will honour former director Joannah Aynsley, who who died from cancer in 2022.

Festival Press Officer Felix Joyce says it's a fitting tribute:

"She was a really really amazing successful director. It feels very important to do some kind of tribute to her and that's what this is. She was very much an advocate and loved grass roots music and community events."

The Oxford Carnival event will be held next month September 1st, for the first time in two years, instead of July.

It's after a two year hiatus due to funding issues.

Felix tells us they expect it to be a slightly smaller event than previous years because of the later date, but it will still have the same energy:

"It will probably be a bit smaller, but it will still be carnival."

Today's fundraising events begin at midday.
