A rally has been held in Bicester opposing plans to close London Road level crossing and introduce an ‘inaccessible’ pedestrian footbridge.

Dozens of people joined the protest, including local residents, businesses and politicians such as the town’s MP, Calum Miller who organised the demonstrations.

Mr Miller, MP for Bicester and Woodstock said: “Residents have made it clear from the start, a footbridge with lifts to replace the Level Crossing would be a catastrophe for Bicester. These plans would cut our town in two and leave too many people stranded.”

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, he said: "I'll be pointing out to the Rail Minister just how strongly people feel about this, as well as illustrating why an up and over pedestrian bridge is not the solution we need.

“I really hope that they will listen and deliver the underpass that everybody in Bicester knows is the right solution.”

He added: “I'm really proud of our town for the strength and support shown. It doesn't surprise me at all because I know how strongly people feel about this issue, but it's great to have sent such a clear signal to East West Rail and the government that we do not want the town cut in two.”

Carole Hetherington, Chair of Langford Village Community Association described the plans as “utterly ridiculous”.

She said: “To me, it's just being a cheapskate. They can find £125 million to protect bats with HS2 that is haemorrhaging money, yet we they don't want to give us a decent underpass which keeps our access into town.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “We recognise the strong views felt locally in Bicester and East West Rail Company is carefully reviewing responses to its consultation.

"Options for the future of the London Road level crossing are still being considered, but any option will need to balance cost with the impact on the community.”

An EWR Spokesperson said: “East West Rail will better connect communities in the Bicester area, by providing greater access to jobs and affordable housing which will benefit future generations. We are working closely with the Government, Network Rail and Local Authorities to offer the safest way to manage the impact of more train services across the London Road Level Crossing.”

“We continue to listen to the feedback from local communities and their elected representatives including Calum Miller MP, to understand how we can deliver this scheme in the least disruptive way possible, ensuring it gives the best opportunities for future needs, in the most cost-effective way."
