Didcot rider dies at opening of Manx Grand Prix

A motorcyclist who lived in Didcot has died during the opening of the Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man

Louis O'Regan died after injuries sustained during the opening qualifying session yesterday (Sunday 18th August).

The 43-year-old Irishman, had been racing in the event since 2013.

The MGP organisers say the accident happened at Kate’s Cottage, which is 34 miles into the 37.73-mile course around the island.

A red flag halted the session at 4:50pm, followed by an extension to all road closures until 7pm according to Isle of Man Police.

The Manx Grand Prix will continue to take place until Monday 26 August, with the next session due to get underway today from 6:30pm.

O'Regan made his debut in the 2013 Newcomers A Race, finishing 12th.

He recorded his personal best lap speed in the 2019 Junior Race, lapping at an average speed of 114.7mph.

In a statement organisers say:

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Louis’s partner Sarah, his family, loved ones, and friends."
