Community is left saddened by death of RuPauls Drag Race UK star The Vivienne, says Oxford Pride
The drag artist died aged 32
Pride organisers in Oxford say the community has been left sad and in disbelief at the death of RuPauls Drag Race UK star, The Vivienne.
The performer, who won the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and came third on the 2023 edition of Dancing On Ice, died on January 5 at the age of 32.
Oxford Pride Chair, Rob Jordan, said: “She was so graceful and would allow us to have drinks with her, just so nice and genuine and didn’t come across as above her station or anything. Just like one of us.”
The Vivienne, also known as James Lee Williams, appeared in theatre, television, comedies, music and many more.
Rob Jordan, says the Vivienne could have become the next Paul O'Grady: “James was just on this massive break-through into theatre, he loved it so much.
“It was that massive crossover, and people were saying he could have been the next Paul O’Grady because the star was rising that fast.”
The drag artist recently featured on a Boxing Day special episode of Blankety Blank, where they received discriminatory and homophobic comments online.
The Oxford Pride Chair said: “It used to be hosted by a drag queen and drag artists have been appearing on there for many, many years so why one appearance in 2024 could throw up so much social media hate is just beyond me.”
"She was a shining light in our community"
In a statement on their website, Oxford Pride says, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to James’ family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with you in grief and solidarity.
“The Vivienne was due to perform at Oxford Pride on Friday, 14th February 2025, an event we had eagerly anticipated. We will provide further updates about this event later in the week. In the meantime, let us honour her memory by celebrating the incredible legacy she leaves behind and supporting one another through this loss.
“The Vivienne was more than a performer; she was a shining light in our community. May her creativity, passion, and love continue to inspire us all.
