The two teams battled it out over a four mile stretch of the River Thames, between Putney and Mortlake, in one of the world's oldest and most famous amateur sporting events.

In front of a crowd of around 250,000 people, Cambridge University sailed to a comfortable victory, claiming bragging rights over rivals Oxford.

Cambridge completed a clean sweep, winning both the men’s and women’s race as well as both reserve races.

“It’s an indescribable feeling"

In the men’s race, Cambridge managed to gain an early lead and ended the race being 17 seconds ahead of Oxford in their sixth victory in seven years.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Luca Ferrero, President of Cambridge Men’s crew, said: “It’s an indescribable feeling and it’s so electric to be out there but it really is about the guys you do it with and the team around you.

He added: “There’s no other race like – I’ve done it a few times before and it always surprises me on the day just how much the noise makes a difference. Every marker all the way down the course just boys you up to keep you going.”

Oxford were looking to turn around recent fortunes today, after losing the last seven women’s races and the last two men’s races – However, it wasn’t meant to be their day.

Just after the start of the race there was a clash between boats, forcing a restart.

Oxford were fighting until the very end, but Cambridge continue their dominance in the women’s race after winning by 2.5 lengths.

Heidi Long, stroke seat for Oxford Women said: “I’m overwhelmingly proud of this team, it feels awesome to wear dark blue. We gave it absolutely everything we had out there, and we’ve been giving everything we can in every training session this year.

“We couldn’t have done much more, and Cambridge have put out an excellent performance.”

This year’s race marked the 170th and 79th men's and women's boat races.
