The old swimming pool in Blackbird Leys has been demolished, paving the way for construction to commence on a new community centre as part of the area's wider regeneration project.

The site of the former swimming pool, which had been temporarily used by Peabody’s contractor, Hill Partnerships, is the final step in demolition work at the location. This sets the groundwork for a new, modern facility at the centre of Blackbird Leys District Centre.

The Blackbird Leys Community Centre redevelopment forms part of a larger regeneration project led by Peabody in partnership with Oxford City Council. It will feature new affordable homes, shops, improved roads and cycle routes, alongside green spaces.

Construction is expected to start this spring, with the cleared site currently undergoing final groundwork preparation.

About the redevelopment

The updated community centre will be designed to meet local needs with three large halls, office spaces, and comfortable areas for relaxation and gatherings. It will host advice services, fun activities, celebrations, and community events.

A public square is also planned alongside the new building. Features include play areas, accessible equipment, rain gardens, public artwork, and the opportunity for locals to contribute to the final design.

Extensive community engagement has informed the plans, with local residents participating in sessions such as exhibitions, walkabouts, and design reviews. Oxford City Council will own and operate the new facility once completed.

The regeneration project is set to deliver 294 new homes across Knights Road and the District Centre, complemented by investment in local infrastructure and public spaces.

Councillor Linda Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at Oxford City Council, said: “It’s fantastic that work is continuing on the redevelopment of Blackbird Leys Community Centre, and we have now seen the final demolition before construction work starts. The new centre will be a vibrant, inclusive space for people to connect and it will be surrounded by new affordable homes, modern shops, and attractive outdoor areas. We’re proud to be making this investment in Blackbird Leys and in the local community in order to make it an even better place to live for local residents.”

Simon Barry, Regional Managing Director for Development at Peabody, added: “It’s great to see the project moving into its next phase. We’re working together with the council to ensure the new community centre delivers what local people told us they want - a practical, welcoming space for everyone.”
