Bicester and Woodstock's MP calls for clarity on extra SEND funding
Calum Miller says local authorities need more support when spending extra money in the Budget
Bicester and Woodstock's MP has called for more clarity on how extra funding for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision should be spent.
Liberal Democrat Calum Miller told Greatest Hits Radio that he welcomed an extra £1bn announced in the Budget.
But he urged the government to clarify how local authorities should make use of the money.
"So many families get in touch with me to say that they are deeply worried about their young people, and how are supported at schools in Oxfordshire."
He added that Oxfordshire County Council - who are responsible for providing education in the county - say a lack of funding has impacted the support they offer.
"They the County Council have run up a deficit of nearly £70 million over the last few years because the government hasn't funded SEND properly.
"I really hope that the money will be put towards improving services, and that the Treasury and the government will get round the table and talk about how can provide for those services on a long-term basis."
The Department for Education say the extra funding in the Budget recognises the "immense need" for investment in SEND, and that the government's plan will "transform" SEND provision and "improve outcomes for young people."
