Suspected historic munition find sparks Newtownards security alert
The device was found at a housing development on Thursday
The PSNI has sealed off an area in a housing development in Newtownards after a suspected piece of historic munition was found.
A cordon was put in place in the Rivenwood area on Thursday and remains in place today (Saturday).
It is understood a specialist could be travelling from England to examine the device.
No one has been evacuated from their homes.
We spoke to one resident:
"I've just heard from a couple of neighbours who have spoken to the police that apparently it's a World War to bomb and apparently there's a specialist coming.
"I do feel a little bit worried I obviously have kids in the house so I do feel a little bit worried but I suppose if they haven't told us to evacuate they mustn't think it's a concern.
"I do feel a little bit worried but I'm hoping it's all ok."
Inspector McClintock said: “I am asking the public to avoid the area during this time where possible.
"Updates will be provided in due course as the incident develops.
“I appreciate this may cause some disruption, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks. I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.”
