The Met Office has named the upcoming area of low-pressure as Storm Agnes - a yellow weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland from noon on Wednesday 27th September to Thursday 28th at 7am.

According to forecasters, “Storm Agnes will move into western areas of the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, with the strongest winds most likely on Irish Sea coasts, though it will be a widely windy day across the UK.”

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Ramsdale said: “While the precise track and depth of Storm Agnes is still being determined, there’s a high likelihood of wind gusts around 50 to 60mph for some inland areas. Exposed coastal areas could see gusts of 65-75 mph with a small chance of a few places seeing around 80mph.

“As well as some very strong winds for many, Storm Agnes will also bring some heavy rain, with the highest totals more likely in Scotland, northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Around 60mm of rain is possible in a few places over high ground in Scotland.”

What to expect on Wed & Thurs during NI’s yellow weather warning:

🌧️ There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris

🌧️ There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

🌧️ There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

🌧️ Longer journey times are likely, or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected. Some roads and bridges are likely to close.

🌧️ There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties; with a chance of some minor flooding of coastal roads.
