PSNI warns drivers to take care on icy roads after temperatures drop overnight
A yellow warning for ice is in place in counties Armagh and Down
As the cold snap continues, drivers in Northern Ireland are being warned ice could make for difficult travelling conditions this morning (Mon 8th Jan).
A yellow weather warning has been issued for counties Armagh and Down until around 10am.
A statement from the PSNI said, “The Police Service of Northern Ireland urges motorists to exercise caution this morning, particularly on untreated roads, as below freezing overnight temperatures have caused widespread ice throughout the road network.”
“Stick to main, gritted roads when possible. Slow down, and increase your braking distance from the vehicle in front.”
The MET office, which has issued the weather warning, says to expect some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. It’s also warning people could become injured from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
A forecast for today’s weather says, “Showers moving inland across south-eastern parts of Northern Ireland will lead to rain falling onto sub-zero surfaces and development of ice on some untreated surfaces.”
It comes after heavy fog over Belfast yesterday led to several flights being diverted.
