An investigation was under way today (Friday) after a trainee at Belfast Zoo was locked in with lions at Belfast Zoo.

It is understood the incident happened earlier this month.

In a statement to Downtown Radio & Cool FM, Belfast City Council, which owns and operates the zoo, said: “Council is aware of an incident at the lion enclosure at Belfast Zoo earlier this month.

“We take the safety of all our staff, visitors and animals very seriously, and an investigation is underway into the circumstances of this incident. We cannot comment further while this is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) said today it was aware of "the incident which took place at Belfast Zoo earlier this month."

"The zoo has informed BIAZA that Belfast City Council, which owns and operates the zoo, is undertaking an investigation," it said in a statement.

". BIAZA will be working closely with the zoo throughout this process but cannot offer further details, as this is a live investigation."
