There is a “profound sense of shock and sadness” in Castlederg following the tragic death of Conor Browne, a local councillor has said.

Sinn Féin Cllr Ruairí Mc Hugh has described the 28-year-old father as a “very fun-loving individual”.

Mr Browne was stabbed outside a bar on Main Street in Castlederg on Saturday evening.

A murder investigation was launched after he later died from his injuries.

Speaking to Downtown/ Cool FM, Cllr Mc Hugh passed on his condolences to Conor's family and friends.

He said: “Conor was civil, hardworking, and big-hearted and the Browne family are well-known and respected in the local area. I wish to extend my condolences to them and his friends at this very sad and difficult time.

“The entire community of Castlederg is united in grief with them and will rally around them in the difficult days ahead."

“I would urge anyone who has any information about this killing that can assist the police investigation to bring it forward”.

Castlederg Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club Caislean na Deirge Naomh Eoghan expressed its sadness in a social media post.

It described Mr Brown as a "hard working, civil, funny and thoughtful young man".

"Conor always wore the biggest smile and would have done anything for anyone. One of the real good guys! This has affected everyone in the parish. If anyone needs help or someone to talk to just pm this page and we will get you to the right resources," it said, extending condolences to his family.”

A vigil of remembrance is happening tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 8pm at the Diamond in Castlederg.
