This week starts with heavy rain and strengthening winds before the weather turns a good deal colder.

Early on Tuesday a deepening area of low pressure will move east across northern Scotland bringing rain, which will be heavy at times, especially across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The rain will be accompanied by strengthening north westerly winds.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Scotland on Tuesday.

Looking further ahead, milder air from the Atlantic is expected to push in on Friday and more especially into the weekend, cutting off the cold air from the north and seeing a return to temperatures nearer average for the time of year.

Northern Ireland's five-day forecast:

This Evening and Tonight: Cloudy with outbreaks of rain through the evening and much of the night. The rain turning heavy for a time in the early hours followed by clear spells and scattered showers. Strong west or northwest winds. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Tuesday: Cool and windy day with a mix of bright spells and showers. Showers turning quite frequent, occasionally heavy, for the afternoon. Strong west to northwest winds. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Wednesday cool and windy with showers focused in north and west. Winds easing and mainly dry and bright for Thursday. Dry start to Friday then rain later.
