Wellingborough hotel fined £75,000 for fire safety failures
The Hind Hotel breached fire safety regulations after failing to fix issues with its alarm system
A hotel in Wellingborough town centre has been handed a £75,000 fine after failing to comply with an enforcement notice from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) to address fire safety issues.
The fine was issued to Hind Wellingborough Limited, which owns The Hind Hotel on Sheep Street, following a sentencing at Wellingborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (4th November).
According to Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, their Protection Team first visited the hotel in May 2024 as part of a routine inspection programme targeting buildings across the county.
During the visit, inspectors identified significant fire safety deficiencies. The most serious concern was a faulty fire alarm system, which evidence suggested may have been non-functional since 2021.
As a result, an enforcement notice was issued to the hotel, requiring the owners to address the faults. However, a follow-up inspection in September 2024 revealed that the necessary actions outlined in the notice had not been carried out.
After identifying the hotel’s failure to comply with the enforcement notice, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service decided to pursue legal action.
Hind Wellingborough Limited was charged with breaching fire safety legislation. The company’s sole director, Marcus Holden, pleaded guilty to the charges in court.
The court imposed a £75,000 fine on the company and ordered it to pay an additional £4,200 in costs alongside a £2,000 victim surcharge.
