A man has pleaded guilty to causing a death in Weedon after driving over the alcohol limit and crashing into a bench.

Keith Turnidge, 76, died in hospital on 11 August 2023, two months after he was struck by a MINI on Bridge Street on 8 June.

Police said the driver, 51-year-old Derren Goddard from Harmans Way in Weedon, was over the legal limit for alcohol and had not driven with due care and attention.

He initially denied the charge but changed his plea to guilty at Northampton Crown Court on Tuesday 21 July.

The judge gave him an interim driving ban and said he must return to the same court on 12 September for sentencing.

"He was sat on a bench and lost his life," a Northamptonshire Police spokesperson said. "We hope this result brings some comfort to Keith’s family as the case moves forward."
