Northamptonshire Police have been talking to us about the importance of road safety.

It's as charity Brake launch a week long campaign highlighting the plight of victims, with activity taking place here and elsewhere around the country over the next few days.

Matthew O’Connell from Northamptonshire Police's Safer Roads Team explains more about just how important a priority it is for the force:

"Road safety is a significant priority for the force. The tragic loss of 29 lives in collisions in 2023 underscores the impact on individuals and families.

"271 people were also seriously injured, requiring urgent medical care."

The charity Brake are now calling on the government to provide sustainable funding and care for road victims and their families.

As well as the organisation's Road Safety week campaign, the Northants force go on to say that their work on the issue continues.

Matthew O’Connell from the Safer Roads Team tells us more:

"Beyond this we look ahead to the Winter Drink Drive Campaign, a critical effort to prevent impaired driving at the Christmas holiday season with roadside breath and drug tests at key times of the day.

"This forms part of our pro-active enforcement."
