Message of kindness issues by Samaritans in Northants ahead of Christmas

Only a couple of sleeps left until Christmas, but in Northamptonshire, we're being reminded of some of the challenges experienced at this time of year.

Simon de Laat, from Samaritans in the East, will be among the volunteers answering calls over the Christmas and New Year period, providing vital support to those struggling during what can be a challenging time of year.

While many might assume a surge in calls occurs around Christmas, Simon explained that the volume remains consistent throughout the year, but the nature of each call may differ.

He said: "What we do see is perhaps a slight change in the reason for calls because people are very isolated over Christmas. People can be very lonely."

The societal expectations and long build-up to the holidays can be particularly difficult for those who feel alone or disconnected.

"People lose touch with friends and family, and that has a major impact on how they feel, possibly seeing other people’s families and doing what people traditionally do at that time of year," Mr De Laat explained. adding that social media can often amplify these feelings.

"People like to post a lovely time they’re having—these are the presents I’ve got, here I am with all my family—and there are so many people out there of all age groups who either have lost touch with friends and families or, through bereavement or separation, have nobody out there."

The role of Samaritans is crucial in providing a listening ear to those in need.

Mr de Laat said: "We’re not judgmental. We don’t offer advice, but we find the best way we can help and support people is to be there as a listener."

The service operates 24/7, even on Christmas Day and New Year’s.

Last year, over the 24 hours of Christmas Day, 1,200 Samaritans picked up the phone at various times across the UK, providing vital support for those who need it most.

For Mr de Laat, the motivation is simple. "In some small way, if we can offer a listening ear, some support to somebody who is going through a difficult time or just needs to talk to somebody, then I think we all feel we’ve done some good," he said.

"You’re not alone. If you are struggling, you are having difficulties, if you are alone, if it’s getting really difficult for you at any time, just pick up the phone and do call us."
