The privately run prison near Wellingborough was found to have a high rate of positive random drugs tests.

Amongst the other findings the report also flagged that self harm was common, and use of force by staff poorly managed.

Violent behaviour was found to be stable in line with the growing capacity at the prison.

The reports also acknowledges:

"A new permanent Director was appointed to the prison in May 2023 and under his

leadership the Board has observed some significant changes, laying the foundations

for greater operational cohesion. There has been increased staff support, improved

communication at all levels and inter-departmental co-operation."

It also states that following the report's conclusion period in March, an agenda for improvement was set out which is in the early stages of implementation.

G4S who run the site say in a statement:

“We are really proud of the development of our staff and the work they have done to build a consistent regime. Our staffing levels are steady but recruitment and retention remains an area of focus.

“We have implemented robust governance arrangements around use of force, including a committee which examines every incident and shares learnings with staff.

“As with other prisons, combatting the ingress and use of drugs remains a challenge. We have built strong relationships with the local police and work closely with them to deal with anyone who seeks to break the law.

“Educational and vocational training has improved significantly since our new provider began work in July, with many more places available and a broader range of opportunities on offer.”
