A Northampton community group are getting an Olympian to litter pick with them when he heads through town.

Chris Boardman CBE, also Chair of Sport England, is embarking on an epic 550-mile cycle from Manchester to Paris over eight days to spotlight the urgent need for climate action in sports.

On Thursday July 18th, Chris and his team will be riding through Northamptonshire on one leg of the mammoth trek.

He's being joined by Trash Free Trails, a national community group with a hub in the county town.

They'll be meeting at the Delapre Bike Park early this afternoon, and members of the public are invited to join Chris Boardman and the peloton to join on a litter picking and cycling trail.

We spoke to Rachel Coleman from Trash Free Trails about what's in store:

"The team at Ride Northampton, which is a local group of riders who all use the bike park here, are very much looking forward to taking him of some of their trails.

"They all have great names and great stories behind them. It's set to be great day.

"One is called Poo Hanger, since when they were setting up the park there was a dog walker who would consistently hang dog poo bags on a hedge nearby.

"When it was moved to make way for the cycleways it was decided one would be named after him."

Chris Boardman tells us why he's taken on this awareness raising challenge to speak up about climate change.

"Everybody is overwhelmed by climate change, it's just too big. But it's already affecting us. 120,000 grass roots football matches lost every year to flooding.

We don't think about as being climate change, the game is just off on a Thursday night, but it happens again and again to the point you stop going,"

Chris, the peloton and the Trash Free Trails team will be at Delapre Park early this afternoon before heading to Milton Keynes to Bisham Abbey. His route then heads to London and Newhaven and Dieppe in France.

He's due to arrive in Paris on Tuesday 23rd July.
