An exhibition at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is showcasing 100 objects that reflect Northamptonshire’s rich history.

The 'A History of Northamptonshire in 100 Objects' funded by Arts Council England, was developed to highlight the county’s history and cultural identity following its division into West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire councils in 2021.

Fifty-one guest curators from across Northamptonshire contributed to selecting the displays and shaping the exhibition.

Victoria Pearson, Histories of Northamptonshire Project Officer at Northampton Museum, explained the motivation behind the initiative:

“The thought process really began after 2021 when Northamptonshire was separated administratively. We wanted to remind people that Northamptonshire remains a county with an incredible depth of history and so many fascinating stories to be shared."

The exhibition spans 150 million years of history and features artefacts from across the county, including items nominated by local museums, history organisations, community groups, and individuals.

From dinosaur footprints found in Irchester Country Park to a Formula One racing car from Silverstone Museum, each object tells a unique story, creating a collective narrative of the people, industries, and events that shaped Northamptonshire into what it is today.

Some distinct items include remains of prehistoric animals such as mammoths and woolly rhinos, as well as historical finds like a Civil War cavalry jacket believed to have belonged to a fleeing Royalist soldier after the Battle of Naseby, complete with a mysterious stain thought to be blood.

The exhibition has received numerous positive reviews from visitors since opening in September last year, according to Pearson:

“People have loved the exhibition for its depth and diversity. It’s not an exhibition to be rushed. Many visitors have returned multiple times to ensure they've had time to absorb all the historic stories captured in these pieces."

‘Histories of Northamptonshire in 100 Objects’ runs until 8th February 2026 at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. For more information, visit the museum’s website.
