Northampton police issues appeal after tampering of codeine medication
Blister packs suspected of being opened and tablets replaced
Police in Northampton are appealing for information after reports of tampering with medication containing codeine at local pharmacies.
The call follows an incident where a shopper discovered a box of Nurofen Plus from a Northampton pharmacy had been tampered with. Inside, the blister pack of tablets had been opened and some tablets were removed or replaced with different ones.
Suspiciones were raised when the box was returned to the store, prompting staff to alert the police. Officers are now investigating and are urging anyone who may have experienced a similar issue to come forward.
Police urge public to check their medication
PC Lydia Chamberlain from Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team described the situation as unusual and encouraged residents to check codeine products in their possession.
"This is an unusual incident whereby the blister pack of tablets inside the box had been opened, the original tablets potentially removed or replaced, and the box somehow put back on the shelf," PC Chamberlain said.
"We would like to establish if such an incident has happened to anyone else and are asking anyone who has bought codeine products from pharmacies in Northampton, and may have noticed that some or all of the pack of tablets had been opened, or incorrect items in the box, to contact police.
"If you currently have a box in your cupboard, please do take a look and check."
Arrest made in connection with Medicines Act offences
A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Medicines Act and has been released on bail while further enquiries take place.
