Northampton General Hospital has been granted permission to move forward with a £15.75 million development, aiming to improve urgent and emergency care facilities significantly.

The new Emergency Department public entrance and Urgent Treatment Centre are expected to be completed by summer 2026. The modern complex will serve as a central hub to ensure patients access the right clinicians in the best environment for their urgent and lifesaving care.

The project will replace Northampton General’s Springfield Urgent Treatment Centre, first opened in 2017, as well as temporary porta cabin entrances to the existing Emergency Department, which have been used since 2023.

Located near the Cliftonville Road entrance, the new site will connect the Emergency Department with the Nye Bevan building. Groundwork for the project has already begun.

Changes to the hospital site have already begun to accommodate construction work.

At the end of November, the existing entrance in the portacabin will move to new temporary portacabins located behind the Nye Bevan building. Signage will direct patients to the new temporary unit, and the hospital has said it will offer regular updates to help ease the transition.

Short stay parking for those using Urgent and Emergency Care services remains free for up to 15 minutes in the Springfield car park, with further drop-off parking available nearby at the South Entrance.

There will be further adjustments to the site in the coming months to support construction, and while efforts will be made to minimise disruptions, Northampton General has noted that some inconvenience may be inevitable as the development progresses.
