New initiatives to encourage girls into motorsport
It's as Silverstone Museum stages a promotion this month
Racing driver Caitlin Wood’s been talking to us as activities are taking place at Silverstone to encourage more female involvement in formula one and motor racing.
The museum at the famous racetrack is running a free entry scheme for girls this month.
After heading from Australia to become involved with race driving here, she told us more about her story:
"On my 7th birthday, I got my first go kart. We had a day at Newcastle circuit, back then 20 years ago, and I span off the track so my Dad had a bit of work to do retrieving my machine.
"However, I was hooked and loved it. I've made my way through junior and national levels and into Europe as well since then.
"20 years ago it was rare to see any female involvement at race meetings. Now it's great to see more women and girls like myself at different rankings of the sport.
"The more girls that are involved in junior stages of go karting and F4, the bigger the number that will progress and hopefully one day even make Formula One."
Caitlin also told us about her own inspirations:
"Le Mans' 24 hour race is definitely on my bucket list. I aspire to want to do that and I've experienced some 24 hour races already. Personally, I'd love to be the first Australian woman to compete and win at the famous event."
